Crap art yeah

So often in today’s society it is the prerogative of corporations to impose restrictive and passive views upon potential human beings, breaking them into molds and markets and making them no better than beasts of ideological burden.  Forget that.

You don’t need your MTV, your Hip-Hop dance video, your expensive CD’s and minidisk players.  Put these down, your chains of suppression, and lower you standards.  Realize that just about any human being could be good as any other particular other human provided they had enough practice, experience, and equipment.  What’s to stop you from making your own damm cd, making it a total piece of crap, and still enjoying the experience of creating something more than any package from corporate America?

I am talking about a new movement of art, the Crap Art movement.  The execution of an idea need not be pretty to be powerful, need not be clean to be pure.  Crap art is a state of mind of the artist, he may turn it on and off at will.  The execution of Crap Art need only be the mindset used to create normal art.  The emphasis is on accepting the first try, and not attempting to edit or revise or worry at all.  The artist should strive to do his best, but it should be his best however he does it.  The Crap Artist is constantly creating crappy art, making up for quality with quantity.  The mind of the Crap Artist is not one of details or finesse but of broad open ideas and sweeping commentary.  Through the sheer volume of work produced, the crap artist will ideally run though every idea easily imaginable, and in order to avoid excessive repetition will be begin to think of new ideas.  This is the secret to true ultimate power.  In any medium, in is the expected of the artist that they spend much time on any one work in order to elevate it above a level that could be easily reproduced by a ten year old.  Because Crap Art lacks this emphasis on quality, 10 year old reproductions are not an issue – the point is that a 10 year old didn’t bother to draw it.  The beauty of Crap Art is not in the form but in the idea.

Q: What are the established forms of crap art?
A: Any conventional medium may be converted to a crap art medium simply through a shift of perceptive viewpoint. Visit http://crapart.spacebar.org/ for more information.  Currently “established” forms include:

Crap Music.  Spearheaded by Thomas Murphy and his “Album in a Day” projects, crap music is one of the more affluent schools of crap art.  The Album in a Day idea is something of a sub-form to crap art, wherein a person is challenged to create, record, and edit an entire CD’s worth of music.  There have been several of these made to date, and they are all listed at http://crapart.spacebar.org/aad/.  Why not make your own?  All you need is yourself.

Crap Art.  This field grew out of the surrealist comic strip Untitled.Gif, a comic made up of insane economics jokes and bad MS paint art.  The comic’s online forum soon became an art following, which then got involved with the overall crap art movement.  Visit http://untitledgif.org for more information.

Crap Writing.  The fine art of just letting your words flow.  There are no long examples of this yet; most efforts have been short pieces.  The Untitled.Gif message board is a good example of such works.  You’re also reading one right now.

These are just the mediums in which somebody has already bothered to apply the crap art methodology.  If you can think of a better one, then by all means go forth and pioneer.  Crap Art is all about coming up with new ideas through the constant reinvention of form, so change everything all the time.

Q: Why challenge myself to create more art in my daily life?
A: Getting up off the couch and making your own crappy art will make you feel better about yourself, about others, about the world.  Human beings need constant mental challenge in order to keep the mind at its peek, and challenging yourself to make art is one of the best ways to culture a happy and inquisitive personality.
