It's commonly pronounced VEE-ah-VIT-ihd-POH.
It is actually an acronym; it stands for Very Evil Arch-Villain In The Deepest Pits Of Hell.
Its roots are in a level for Doom II. The leve in question was, and is, a part of the "Master Levels", one of a set of twenty official extra levels distributed by iD software to generate more income from the aging Doom license. Its accompanying text file included a small summary on how it fit into the "storyline" of the Doom mythos; a somewhat minor character was Veavitdpoh, Very Evil Arch-Vile In The Deepest Pits Of Hell (the Arch-Vile being an enemy from the game). Given the obscurity of the source - due both to rarity, to the unlikelihood of someone actually reading the summary, and to the many years that have passed since anyone really did anything about Doom - I felt that I was safe in absconding with the acronym in question and making it my own. |
