here is my intro. paragraph:
In dealing with such a wide-spanning and complex subject as the study of African-American creative musics, it is difficult to categorize the driving polarities thereof without first referring to the general basic polarities of light and dark, or, the positive and the negative. The light or positive components of African-American music can be thought of as the most clearly defined aspects that have shaped its progression. The dark or negative components can be viewed as the complexities that have functioned as both causes and effects in the progression of the music. It is important to view these positive and negative polarities not simply as opposites; dark is not necessarily the opposite of light as much as it is the absence of light. Trans-Christianity has functioned as both a positive and negative component in African-American music in that it has both defined and complicated the concept of identity.
