Until January last year, I was in Brisbane permanently... now I'm discovering the joys of l'Europa and pining for my Brisbane M.
For coffee, the best I've found is Fat Boys in the Valley Mall (ie Brunswick st). Fun and interesting people, good food. Good coffee and the best cooked breakfasts in the known universe can be found at various places along Boundary st in West End. The Gunshop is pretty trendy, but good... Three Monkeys is popular... Atomica is up there... try them all out.
(See previous post for extra recommendations, except that Avid and Bent Books are both on BOUNDARY st -- I always get those two confused!)
If you like live music, grab a copy of the free street magazines: Time Out, Rave, there're some others too -- that come out on Wednesdays as I recall. A goodly portion of the good live music is in Fortitude Valley, so Fat Boys is a good base for your operations.
Hey, I happen to know that the Brisbane film festival is starting up very soon, so check it out and grab some tickets. They're based at the Regent Theater (cinema) in the middle of the city mall.
Ok, that should get you started...
