I doubt either format will ever overtake CDs. CDs are already as good as the average consumer could ever hope for, so it will take a lot of work to try to sell a new format. (I mean, look how long HDTV is taking, and that actually makes a noticeable difference!) If consumers actually cared about audio quality, CDs wouldn't be compressed (as in dynamics) like there's no tomorrow...
The only point of DVDA and SACD (aside from the audiophile sound quality improvement) are the recording companies' ability to better control what you do with them. Hopefully, consumers won't stand for that.
