Max's album 12 was really the turning point in his early career in several ways: he finally abandoned the antics that had originally been his crutch, particularly in his notoriously failed album 5 (dixit co-creator and cousin Bernard Health) "nnnnnnnnnrghhhh i;m killing fase" which grossed less than $10 in its opening month. In place of amateur stunts max dug to a deeper, more soulful vibe vis-a-vis his insurgent naked man. At the time his publicist charaterized his transition as "Less Explose. More Expose." Independent observers confirmed a more somber defined max at his Apollo performance, but erstwhile adversary and rock sensation Fred Durst was not convinced. "No I don't believe it and, frankly, neither does anybody else. It's the same max in a new package, but unlike the Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines fiasco this guy doesn't even have the decency to change his name.
