love and not defending the own stand in the world (family, friends, lifestyle...) is not equivalent. love your enemies does ring true, turn the other cheek does not.
what mr m l king did not mention is even more important: not only can hate only generate hate it also destroys those who hate.
so here is my aim in life: learn how to be myself, defending my lifestyle and p.o.v. seeing life as it is without blurring out the tough details and without becoming bitter or hateful.
this i believe would be a good policy for nations as well.
