hmm, i agree.

world climate would have been chilled to the degree of some cool war no matter what.
however, the more tolerant and farsighted voices in the states have been silencend effectively and the speed has increased considerably.

quite fittingly temperatures in austria have fallen as well and the heating system does believe that weather is linked with dates so i am freezing in and out.

If Bush was blaming this on the Chinese, THAT would have been perfect for us. Missle defense (our hottest pet project) MIGHT have worked for China, but it's absolutely positively no good for Osama. Bush, via Rumsfield, actually wanted to scale back our convention forces even further.
Of course, you can't argue with 80% approval ratings, so he can't be too upset (assuming a reasonable and prudent level of cynicism) but this incident does make his two key themes, missle defense and tax cuts, seem like really bad ideas.

The people *I* think are really secretly delighted? American intelligence authorities. Vastly expanded powers and funding coming their way. Funny how useful it can be to occasionally screw up really badly at your job, just to make sure everyone understands how necessary your job is. Does the CIA believe in Error Art?
