Well, absolute zip except to the extent to which it supplies a viable ethical framework to those who are incompetent to devise their own, where such a framework forms part of the religion; and also the provision of self-confidence to those who lack it (which is a kindness).

Must stop talking to myself. Third sign of madness.

But sometimes the belief can make itself true. If we believe the world is a kind and just place, we will treat each other with more respect and trust. If I believe a child will be a genius, I will encourage her intellectual efforts. If I believe I will have a happy retirement, I will remember to save money to spend when I'm old.

Perhaps I might turn the other cheek more often if I can convince myself that the lion will lie down with the lamb?
