that is true that every point counts, and in my opinion why a single letter should not be played.  This is even more important when the space is a premium (triple or double letter score).  For instance, if  MA is already in place setting up a TLS, then just playing the X will give the game 28 points.  Adding an I in a subsequent play would make an additional 9 points.  If you play the XI together, the score is 53 pts, because the X will be tripled for both words.

A game started with a 3-letter word in a vowel/consonant/vowel pattern can be worth as much as a triple word score if played right == meaning 2 words should be made from each of the TLS boxes. Shorter words that can be added to will make more points down the line, because each time the letter is added, the "old" letters' points get counted all over again.
