Marc - Thanks for your reply and the great description of your techniques!
I got it working in EnergyXT - not sure what I was doing wrong before. I was getting some very cool sounds with two instances of rezsynth running simultaneously. Modulating the band separation in one of them gave me a very interesting phasing effect.
This is going to be fun...
