Much has been written about the comments regarding questionable plays, but a comment left today (8/1/04) just threw me for a loop.
A long-time player I respected (who doesn't need to be named - the player knows who he/she is) didn't like a play made by someone many of us have come to hate to see on the boards, and left the following comment, verbatim: "the sad thing about is [player] probably just got home from church" That's just too personal for me! It's casting aspersions on the personal life of someone I believe none of us know personally. And even if the player is personally known, what the heck kind of person feels the right to knock someone's faith & beliefs because they made a crummy play in a game?! It's one thing to tell a player they made a stupid/wasteful play, it's another to drag in religion and guess that the player is a religious hypocrite -- and I just don't see any connection between someone's religious beliefs and how they play this game. There is no commandment stating "Thou shalt not make stupid scribble plays." I, too, get frustrated at some of the plays made, and certain players in particular, but I belive the comments left about those plays/players should not get dragged down to this base level. I lost a lot of respect for the commentor and am glad no one chose to respond to it. Even if made as an off-hand remark, it says a LOT about the person who made the comment. As a politician said last week, I don't wear my religion on my sleeve, but I am offended by those who question the beliefs of others for no good reason, and in this forum it had no place. |
