and you frequently block the triple squares by placing a 7 letter word that can't be extended to the next triple or play a low-scoring word on a triple.

Curtis' statement that 'more often than not your plays use an S' refers to using the S unnecessarily -- i.e., why spell 'pits' when you don't need the S to play the word (by playing off the P, for example)? There are only 4 esses in a game and they can be used much more advantageously to increase the score.

And think about this: if YOU're frustrated, how do you think the seasoned players feel when you use a prepium tile (like the z) to get only 13 points?
Starting the game with a 3 letter word is a strategy used in order to make high points; read the expert guide and it will explain why we start with either a 3 letter word or a 7 letter word, and nothing in-between.
