Since these guys have been around for awhile and won't change their method of playing, I've made a few changes in the way I play when they show up. I try to think of playing a game with them adds a new dimension to the game: to outfox the trolls.
1. Stop playing when the trolls are here. They think they've chased me away, but really I'm limiting their play - if 1 troll is playing, he can only run through the boards once, then quits (except for anon webbie and Helen/RHelen, who do make more than 1 play at a time but tire of playing with themselves easily). If 2 or more are playing, I find they make all the stupid plays they can (using premium tiles, the s tiles, the triple squares) then they go away. Also, it's no fun for them unless they think they're getting to you. I know it cuts into my playing time, but it does help save my sanity. 2. DON"T MAKE SETS! If you don't want them to blow a trip, then don't set it up for them! This includes being careful up to 5 tiles away from the trip tiles, cuz that anonwebbie is damn good at putting down a 5 ltr word to blow the trip (from H1 to H5, for example), showing everyone that while he could be a good player, he's just a troll. (I think he believes it shows how clever he is, but it only proves how childish he is.) 3. Use the premium tiles yourself, don't save them -- don't waste a premium tile, but use it on a double if you have to - the trolls like wasting the z, x, j etc on a low scoring word. 4. Try not to encourage them with negative comments. I know, sometimes it's hard and I break this rule, but it's easy if you follow #1, stop playing : ) 5. Go ahead and try to end the game. I often play "no words possible" -- if enough of us do it, the game ends and we can start all over. Besides, it just makes me feel good. |
