What app do you use the plugins in? The thing with Rez Synth, Skidder, & Buffer Override is that they are effects (by that I mean they process audio input), but they also can use MIDI to control some aspects of the effect. For Rez Synth, you need MIDI to do anything. Bandpass resonant filters are "played" by MIDI notes. For the other two, MIDI is very much optional, although Buffer Override is much more fun with MIDI note control (check the docs for more info).

But I ask which app you use because not all support sending MIDI to VST effects. Logic 5, Cubase, Max/MSP, Spark XL 2.0, & Nuendo all can do this, but that's it I think (for Mac). Like I said, you don't need this feature for Skidder & BO, but you definitely do for Rez Synth.
