that is true that every point counts, and in my opinion why a single letter should not be played. This is even more important when the space is a premium (triple or double letter score). For instance, if MA is already in place setting up a TLS, then just playing the X will give the game 28 points. Adding an I in a subsequent play would make an additional 9 points. If you play the XI together, the score is 53 pts, because the X will be tripled for both words.
A game started with a 3-letter word in a vowel/consonant/vowel pattern can be worth as much as a triple word score if played right == meaning 2 words should be made from each of the TLS boxes. Shorter words that can be added to will make more points down the line, because each time the letter is added, the "old" letters' points get counted all over again.
Thanks for putting this link on the main page, Tom ;-)

LOL, I just thought of something else. Sometimes that single letter is to set up a premium square for a premium letter. I just came from a board where T was two squares below a triple letter score. I placed an E above it to set up the triple letter score for the J, but if two words aren't made with the J (jet and jam, for instance) it defeats the purpose of the set up.
Sorry if I am over explaining this, but maybe it will help some new players.

Thanks for the reply deni.
To clarify, in a scenario where you use 'a' to make secondary word 'an' instead of just playing 'an' directly, we are only talking a maximum of 3 extra points (if the 'a' was placed on a triple letter score) right? |
