I couldn't find that particular game in archive, but here is a game that illustrates the concept (archive games are in plain text, so it may take some time to get used to looking at this format):

http://archive.snoot.org/scribble/05.07/04.08.21.35-1151.html

See that I started with ALA.  Next play AX, went "out" from ALA, for 50pts; the word FAX going "up and down" on both blue squares (TLS - triple letter score) would have been worth only 37pts.

Next play was YIN, placed below ALA to give the most options for play on the top TLS.  HO then started HOPI (which, if it had been played all at once was worth 33pts) for a total of 47pts.

Playing "out" from above AX, RIM added 29pts, and by placing the T later, TRIM gave us a bonus 5pts.

Less is more in scribble --lol, until you get to the trips, but it's the same principle-- making 2 words (even little words) from a colored premium square will always double your score.

I was hoping to direct you to Mikey's expert guide concerning this type of start, but the experts don't use it, so he doesn't give much detail after saying that a vowel-consonant-vowel start can be used if you don't have a 7-letter word to begin.

HTH ;-)
o, ps...

and "they are collectively worth a trip" meant [as you see noted at word 12] those itty-bitty plays added up to 179 points, which equals a respectable 8-letter double triple word score.
