well, the "how" part of this I can answer:

WebTV assigns one of four morphing IPs to the players (netcache-3001 thru 3004). The IP can change at random. So one quit might be registered as coming from netcache-3001.webtv.net, and the next as coming from a netcache-3004.webtv.net, even though it's the same player.
