Standards, maybe; but unless you're totally interested in physical things (which I'm assuming you're not) then the people who don't meet your intellectual standards you won't be interested in anyway, so: problem solved.
I'll tell you exactly what it is: it's a combination of social skills and age. I'm not presuming to know anything about you, but most deeper thinkers seem to have less grasp of the social lubricant niceties than your average rugby player (there's one for _you_, Rob! Who else will know what rugby is?). And let's face it: girls your age are almost universally not mature enough to be looking for the right thing (a 'nice' guy). Sorry girls, but it's true. You don't sort yourselves out until the early twenties, at least.
Maybe I'm in a crass mood today; I still don't know about you, 0magus, but I've seen some butt-ugly guys get laid on account of their senses of humour, so don't even be concerned about looks (if you are).
OK, here we go: Sex is not a random ocurrence (except perhaps for citizen N. ;). Sex without SOME sort of care for the other person is probably the most hollow thing I can think of. So don't sweat it. Then again, I'm not the one undergoing forced celibacy at the moment, so it's easy for me to say. :)
I've been through what you're going through. All you can do is enjoy the angst and use it to fuel your art. Be extroverted (or fake it), and meet as many people as possible. Don't say 'no' to ANY social offering! Don't say 'no' to ANY social offering! DON'T say 'no' to ANY social offering!
And be comfortable with who you are and like yourself.
