I thought your hardest drive one was great, especially the ICMP based inflight drive, I am not ethical however and ran a script to put together an inexhaustible list of reliable ping-responders with "good" latency and skipped the NBD aspect and wrote a raw unix driver which you can boot VMs from with network host-side.
