I think it's very likely that people do not know the chat is there. I didn't for a long time and now I sometimes forget to look until I've entered a word. I too do not want to start another argument, but I frequently ignore the chat when it appears to be condescending or mean-spirited, especially when two players are making nasty comments about about a third player.
I also don't know the meaning of some of the abbreviations used in the chat. I could ask, but I don't like to interrupt other players.
Not sure what the solutions is, but I do think you've identified the problem. |

I agree that most new players are unaware of the 'chat' postings. That HAS to be the reason friendly suggestions for play are ignored!!
I do make negative remarks after suggesting a word play that is purposely (it seems) ignored. Especially when a double trip is fouled up.
Unforunately I don't have a 'fix' for this conundrum! |

I, too, didn't notice the chats for a while when I first started playing. It's just not that obvious. It's a hard habit (at least for me) to scan for chats before playing a word so I think it's a very good chance that some new players don't notice them. |
