Tom or someone else may have a different (better) explanation, but I'd say it's because the games have different objectives.

In Muddle, the objective is for one person tries to find as many words as possible in a limited time, so if an 'aid' is used the aid is finding the words, not the player, and that's cheating.

In Scribble, the object is to work together to get as high a scoring game as possible. Since you aren't trying to beat another player OR the game, you can't possibly cheat anyone/thing.

p.s. you can't possibly know that most people playing 8+ ltr words don't know the meaning of those words - you only know players by what you see them play. and I think Tom says in the game's instructions that you should try something even if you don't think it's a word - the game's dictionary will tell you if it is viable or not.

I don't encourage it on Scribble, and don't really like the fact that so many people rely on aids there. Certainly, you should feel welcome to play Scribble without computer help.

But the main difference is that muddle is competitive, and playing against someone who is using a program is pointless and unfun. It taints the high-score boards and word lists, making the game less fun for everyone. So, please don't use computer aids for muddle.

>> if you asked most of these people to use the 8, 9, or even 10-letter word they have just made in a sentence, their response would probably be, "Huh?". <<

I beg to differ... firstly, just because a word is 8 or 10 letters doesn't make it obscure. Look at the trips on the recent 1931 game -- COEXISTS, PREJUDGED, BIOHAZARD, and MYSTIQUES -- I'd guess that everyone here knows what those words mean.

Secondly, I myself have been compelled to look up certain words whose definition I didn't previously know. How can you not be curious what a FRAXINELLA is, after all? So I am generally able to use these words in sentences:

"The meadow contained many species of flowers, including JONQUILS, DEUTZIAS, and FRAXINELLAS."  :-)

Thank-you for posting. I'm sure many agree with what you (146.235.130.52) said. I know I do.
