I did it. Much earlier than expected, too -- a couple of months ago, I figured such a score was impossible. Then I revised that to where I thought it would take years to accomplish.
http://archive.snoot.org/scribble/04.09/23.14.48.07-1943.html
The best part? This wasn't a low-1900s game. It was a total, utter blowout of every Top 50 game ever played. The trip sum was 1357, higher than average but nothing phenomenal. The non-trip sum, however, was 586, which is unbelievably high. There is practically no point in playing anymore -- quite simply, barring divine intervention, I don't think anyone will ever beat this, including myself.
I was playing for an hour or so, all mediocre games that were ended early, and I said "I'll play one more game, and then I'm gone." -- this was that one more game. What a relief. I can die happily now. It's over. :-))))

Just started playing the game, and it's fun.
The game instructions say that Scribble uses the Official Scrabble Players Dictionsry, version 3, but just in my first days here, I have seen many words accepted that are not in there. Examples: iraq, joyce, nile, ok, tv, ufo, yale. What is the source of these extra words?
The instructions also say that a legal word must consist of two or more letters, but the game also accepts the one-letter words a and i. It should not accept "i" because it is always capitalized (unless you're thinking of letter grades or mathematical symbols, which opens up a new can of worms--shouldn't all letters then be acceptable?). |

if they've read the instructions and guide and are making honest mistakes, then i have never seen anyone belittle anyone. it's the people that continually mess the boards up with no regard for anyone. it's a co-op game and that works both ways. for the new comers and the old timers. if a new comer just wants to play their way with no regard for the rules, why should an old timer be nice? they are the ones that aren't making an effort. this is co-op and that means we work together, not alone. you can practically just go down the list of words and pick out who made them. it's the same people making the same plays that mess up the board. this is scribble, not scrabble. and when suggestions are offered, then it is the suggestor who all of a sudden becomes the enemy; needs to lighten up; is picking on the webbies... etc. baloney. it's the webbies who purposely make a word that nullifies the triple and then they want everyone to conform to their way of playing or else they are being picked on. i find it suspicious that the only people who purposely mess up the board are webbies. and therefore, i believe they do it on purpose and are not senile seniors trying to keep their noggin ticking. |

I'm tired of all the bickering on the boards. Please be nice. I thought this was supposed to be fun? I can't tell you how many people are driven away after playing once. Maybe that makes some people happy. Not me. I like to think everyone is welcome, not just the few chosen.
I know of 2 elderly people (on webtv) who play this game. They play the game, in their words, "to keep the noggin<sp?> ticking." When they are belitteled, they email me and ask why. I have no explanation for the behavior toward beginners.
Thanks Tom for providing the games. I know one Senior Center that loves 'em.
Off to play some games,
webber

I just played the best game, by far, of my Scribble "career". You be the judge as to its awesomeness:
http://archive.snoot.org/scribble/04.09/21.17.55.45-1885.html
Highlights include: A 10-letter premium-DLS word as the first trip, the first two trips being worth 832 points (!!!!), the new record for total trip sum (1426! Old record was 1396!), and most importantly, NOT A SINGLE EIGHT-LETTER TRIP! :-)))
Interestingly, since this didn't have all-premium DLS's, the all-premium record (1868) is now lower than the 3-premium record. hehe. Like I said in the chat, though -- if this game couldn't hit 1900, I really wonder if it's ever gonna happen. This game was a thing of beauty, and thankfully a good player was around to take advantage :-)
OK, I'm done. :-)

i was hopeful that something was being done to prevent people from ruining all the games... even the expert ones. but they are still here. and the sad thing is, we are starting to suspect it is people we know, who know how to play. this is a fun game, but it hasn't been lately. i am trying not to be negative, but lately, it has been easier to just not play than put up with all that is going on. well, i'm going back to give it another try. i do understand that people won't always play to make a double triple, so spare me the sermon here. it is the people who are purposely messing up the board that upset me. i know i'm not perfect, not even close. but i never try to f/u a board on purpose. |

Here are six chess variations I got from a book called Games for the Superintelligent, by James F. Fixx. Everything is quoted word for word. I don't know if you'll be able to program all of them into SICO.
• Replacement chess: men are not removed from the board. When captures are made, the pieces are replaced on the board at a position chosen by the player who makes the capture. One must win by effectively cutting off the enemy king from his own forces.
• Progression chess: pawns do not "queen" but instead increase in power as they advance. The pawn on the fifth rank has the movement of the knight, on the sixth of a bishop, on the seventh of a rook, on the eighth of a queen. Moving backward, it loses its power the same way. Otherwise the game is played the same as standard chess.
• Check: the winner is the first to give a simple check; mate is not necessary. The games are usually quite short.
• Addition chess: another variety of progressive chess where the progression is in the number of moves. White opens with one move, Black takes two moves, White makes three, Black four, and so forth.
• Cylindrical chess: the board is imagined to be a cylinder with the edges adjoining, pieces slipping freely from one side of the board to the other. There are, in other words, no side edges.
• Secret arrangement of pieces: a screen is placed at the midpoint of the board and each player arranges his men as he chooses. |
