Attacking a regular public figure like the president or something wouldn't be offensive. But when that public figure is the leader of a person's religion, you are in effect attacking their system of beliefs. Whether they are pious or not, they have a right to be offended. Just because a person might not act in a stereotypical way for their ethnicity doesn't mean they can't be offended by racial jokes about stereotypes, or portrayal of stereotypes, etc.
One last thing. . .

I forgot to say, the message didn't seem like whining--it had some valid points, with the exception of the same two authors thing. As as far as your comment "But here, on the internet, we. . .", well it seems a bit presumptuous to think that you can speak for everyone on the internet regarding religious beliefs.

And some people might find whining pretty convincing; I sure did :)

The similar host thing may be my fault. I live in a small town in which my friends and I love snoot. We love scribble, and we love to write. We do not rig the votes or anything. Since the hosts are blank in the voting area we vote as any other would do, not telling each who wrote what. One possible fix might be to accept more votes before choosing the winner.
