I don't think kirbies would be useless at all. What I'm suggesting is that kirbies be allowed to capture only _other kirbies_. Kirbies can't capture other pieces, and other pieces can't capture kirbies, which still makes kirbies very useful to block other pieces.

At first allowing kirbies to be captured by the enemy king sounded pretty appealing to me, but then I thought about it and it has a fatal flaw. If the white king is hiding behind a wall of kirbies, the black king won't be able to take any of them because that would require moving into check.

Another thought on the interface...

The way comments are decoupled from moves isn't working very well for me. It's nice to be able to leave a comment without moving, but several times already I've lost comments that I'd typed into the comment textfield because I made the "mistake" of clicking on a piece instead of the comment button. What I'd prefer is that the contents of the textfield be retained through the process of making a move and "committed" along with the move itself if one is actually made. The button then becomes a "comment without moving" button that the user doesn't have to push in the common case where they are in fact making a move.
