The medieval immediate ancestor of chess is "Shatranj"

In short: pawns move only one space
Queens move only one space, like kings.
Bishops move exactly two spaces, can move over other pieces.
Tends to be a bit of a meat grinder.
I presume that the earlier comment about the difficulty of cylindrical chess goes to any non-rectangular board, like the hundreds of circular chess variants.
There are also some four-handed variants on the square board ... would that be possible? |

If you check the url below you will see the game with the highest word score ever in scribble. The word is Quizmaster for a total of 499 points. This was acieved with alot of team effort.

I have to say that Susan is probably the best Muddle player I've seen. She almost always has the highest score! I couldn't type that fast even if I could find all those words!!!!!

Wow, I don't even know how to begin. Tonight, 10/6/2003, LJ and myself played a game of Scribble that will, in all likelihood, *never* be broken points-wise. We completely annihilated the old scoring record (of which I bragged a few weeks ago) by 101 points!
We scored 1709. You read that right. Seventeen hundred and nine.

Just a few days ago, I had proclaimed that we'd probably all be "six feet under" before a game over 1700 points was achieved. Now it has been done, and, thankfully, we're not dead yet :-)
I have been playing Scribble at this site for the past six years. LJ has been playing here even longer than I. We are by far the oldest Scribble "veterans" on this site, other than Tom. In those six years, I'd estimate that LJ and myself have played upwards of 3000 games, if not more. This game will forever represent the culmination of all our efforts. Quite simply, it will never, ever, ever, *ever* be broken. Never. Ever. :-)
I don't know what's left to say -- as LJ proclaimed, "We can both die happy now". :-) Originally, I had planned to "retire" if a 1700+ score was ever reached, thinking that it was impossible. But I can't just abandon this site after all these years. We'll still be here, though playing the games will probably never be as exciting again, since we know there's no chance we'll ever break this score.
That's all. My apologies for this long "essay", but such a score deserves such an egotistical rant and rave. Simply amazing. We made history tonight.
Lastly, I just want to thank Tom for making this site. :-) We'll see you on the boards!

Tom,
In your infinite generosity, would it be possible to send me the list of words that Scribble deems acceptable? I am putting the final touches on a huge Excel sheet, which lists *all* words with J,Q,X, or Z on the DLS... the actual words have been entered -- all that's left are not really words, just proper nouns that I have to test. Like I found out the game takes BREZHNEV, a former Soviet president. Also, today I learned the game takes both IBM and ICBM (!!). Instead of having to think of these things on my own and testing each one, was hoping I could skip a step and just request the dictionary you use...

In "no queens" shouldn't promotion to a queen be disallowed? I think it would maintain the flavor of the game better. |

The two oldest veterans of Scribble (besides Tom... heh), LJ and myself, have finally broken the single game scoring record in Scribble. The old record, set on 3/25/2001, was 1601 points -- the new record, set on 9/17/2003, is 1608 points! This game was two and a half years in the making. Only two games above 1600 have ever been played in history -- both of us, plus a third player (MJ), were involved in that first game as well. :)
