Italians are used to watch tragedies outside their country like if they're in a cinema, for some exciting movie.
They are not angry, they are not afraid, just intrigued.
As for me, I am angry, slightly troubled, conscious of my impotency. |

I will admit he seems rather incompetent at times.Right now its hard for Americans to really focus on that. This is the worst tragedy most of us have seen in our whole lives in America.Thousands of innocent lives lost in a flash.Yes it brings me to a morbid since of creativity. In someways it has a transcendent and dreamlike feel. However that Bin Ladin bastard should die for this. |

I have been gratified and reassured to see how many of the Americans I have contact with, however light, are talking of help, support, rationality and the stupidity of knee-jerk reactions. It is always too easy to believe an entire people are like their president.
A friend in the pub said "The Americans have declared war". She was referring to "declaring war on terrorism". This is hot air, not war. A meaningless statement. But does this mean the people of America will stop funding the IRA?
Gratuitously at once reassured and deliberately inflammatory,
Rob |
